The forest department officials along with members of an non-governmental organisation caught a crocodile from a pond in Variyav village on the outskirts of Surat city on Saturday morning.

The forest officials are now planning to release the reptile either in the river or keep it in the local zoo. The crocodile was caught after a trap was laid near the pond two days ago by the forest department. Surat DFO Anil Vasawa said, “We have not yet decided whether we should set it free.”

The crocodile was first spotted in the pond a year ago. Darshan Desai, a member of the NGO — Prayas — that helped in trapping the crocodile, said, “It was in pond for last one year. We have not come across any information about the attack of crocodile to any villager of Variyav. We assume that it’s a five-year-old reptile and it’s around five-foot-long.”
