An unmarried couple committed suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati river from Vivekanand Bridge on Monday reportedly after the boy’s family did not allow them to get engaged.

Police said Raju Asodia of Patan and Rinku Parmar of Ahmedabad jumped into the river in the morning. Their bodies were fished out after a few hours. Police found an identity card of Raju from the spot that helped them to find out his family, who identified the girl too.

Ellisbridge police said Raju worked at a factory in Gomtipur, which is close to Rinku’s residence. They met each other about a year ago and fell in love. After a few months, the couple informed their families who reportedly had no objection to their relationship.

However,Raju’s family had asked him to wait for a year or two till his elder brother got married, police said, adding that Raju agreed to do that but he wanted to get engaged to Rinku. When his family did not allow that, the couple took the extreme step, they added.

Police registered a case of accidental death and further investigation was on.
