Cop arrested for Dalit’s death at Rajkot hospital
Deceased was semi-conscious when he was released from the police station

Assistant sub-inspector Ashwin Kangad was arrested in Rajkot on Monday in connection with the death of Hamir alias Gopal Rathod, a Dalit, allegedly due to police torture. He was sent to two-day police custody by a local court on Tuesday.
Kangad, attached to Malaviyanagar police station in Rajkot, was arrested by B J Chaudhary, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Division) of Rajkot city police.
“He was produced in a court today with an application seeking his remand for two days. The court granted our plea,” Sudhir Desai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) of Rajkot city police said.
This is the first arrest in connection with Rathod’s death on April 16. A casual labourer residing in Ambedkarnagar, Rathod was allegedly picked up by a team of Malaviyanagar police after he intervened in a quarrel on the night of April 14.
He was released by the police in the early hours of April 15 and was in a semi-conscious state when he returned to his residence from the police station with his neighbour Nanjibhai.
After Rathod did not wake up on Monday morning, he was rushed to a private hospital, where he died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment. His family had alleged that Rathod was tortured by the police, leading to his death.
“Investigation so far has revealed that he (Kangad) was the only policeman involved in the incident. Therefore, he is the only one to be arrested so far,” Desai said.
