Assuring success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and Gujarat incharge Mukul Wasnik urged Congress leaders to accelerate local issues through padyatras and jansampark campaigns as shown by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“Congress leader Rahul Gandhi covered 4,000 kms from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and created a historical record by walking. If all of you, as heads of the city-district organisations, accelerate local issues through padyatra, success will be assured,” an official statement from the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) quoted Wasnik as saying.

Wasnik, who is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, chaired an elaborate meeting Sunday with senior GPCC leaders, former Congress presidents and former opposition leaders at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Ahmedabad.

In the meeting with the presidents of 33 districts and eight municipal corporations, each senior leader was made the incharge of two to three districts for the Lok Sabha elections. “The senior leader has been entrusted with the responsibility of two to three Lok Sabha seats where he will tour and conduct an in-depth study and tour with the local leaders on the upcoming Lok Sabha election process, the organisation, local social gatherings and local issues, reasons for public agitations among others. He will then submit a full report to the GPCC president,” the statement said.

While GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil has been made the incharge of Chhota Udepur and Bharuch; Jagdish Thakor has been given the charge of Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West and Sabarkantha; Siddharth Patel of Kheda, Anand and Mehsana; Arjun Modhwadia of Banaskantha, Rajkot, Junagadh and Kutch; Bharatsinh Solanki of Panchmahal, Vadodara, Navsari and Surat; Amit Chavda of Bhavnagar, Amreli and Surendranagar; Paresh Dhanani of Gandhinagar, Patan, Porbandar and Jamnagar; and Sukhram Rathwa of Dahod, Bardoli and Valsad.

Senior leaders, too, presented their suggestions regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Wasnik also emphasised the role of city and district presidents. “In order to make the party’s programmes successful, one has to push through the disappointment of defeat. Party organisation has to be broadened and responsibility has to be shared. Coordination in organisation between district-taluka is necessary,” Wasnik stated in the meeting.

He is also learnt to have made it clear that priority would be given to those who work “sincerely”. Those who are unable or unwilling to give time for the party programmes, despite being in responsible positions in the organisation, will be freed from such responsibilities, and new people to be given a chance, he said. “Accountability will also be decided along with the responsibility,” GPCC stated.

After the meeting, Gohil said that time limits have been fixed for various responsibilities assigned in the organisation. “It is necessary to complete the assigned work promptly for the membership campaign of ‘haat se haat jodo abhiyan’. The meeting also discussed how to stress on the jansampark campaigns and make them most effective by addressing the local issues. Recently, the Narmada flood has caused huge damage in Narmada, Bharuch and Vadodara districts. While the government has mocked the affected by announcing the relief package providing meagre financial compensation, Congress will fight to ensure adequate compensation to the affected,” Gohil stated.
