Congress MLAs staged a walkout in the Assembly Thursday when their objection over a private member resolution criticising the Centre for allegedly limiting the constitutional rights and financial freedom of states was overruled.
When the resolution by BJP MLA Sanjay Patel came on the floor of the House for reading,Congress chief whip Balwantsinh Rajput raised a point of order calling it anti-federal and anti-Lok Sabha.
When Speaker Vaju Vala overruled the point of order, not considering examples of rulings in the past by other speakers, all Congress members walked out for the House in the second session.
Subsequently, the resolution was passed by the BJP.
The resolution said that though the federal structure leads to growth of states,in recent years, there have been efforts to make the system more centralised by trying to limit their constitutional rights and economic freedom. According to Patel, recommendations by the Interstate Council have not been followed while states have been prevented by the Centre from attaining financial stability and central grants have been cut.
