The police recovered the decomposed body of a nine-year-old boy,who was the nephew of a Congress MP,near a highway in Banaskantha on Friday, five days after he went missing from an amusement fair being held near his house in Naroda area.

The boy,it turns out,was electrocuted in the fair after which the organisers and the staff, fearing police action and public outrage, had disposed the body near the highway.

Three persons, including the fair organiser, have been arrested by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) while a hunt has been launched for other suspects who are at large.

The boy,Mayur Thakor, was the nephew of Jagdish Thakor, the Congress MP from Patan. He had gone missing on June 24. Mayur’s parents,Balaji and Jyotsana Thakor, had gone to the local police station the next day to lodge a missing complaint but police did not act swiftly, the Congress MP had alleged earlier.

A complaint was finally registered only after the MP called up the minister of state for home on June 25.

DCP (Crime) Himanshu Shukla said,“One of the staff at the fair spotted Mayur lying on the ground unconscious. He took him inside a tent to see if the boy was fine. When he found he had died of electric current,he called the organiser,Kunal, who discussed the matter with other staff. They finally decided to dispose the body.”

DCB officials said they drove in a car towards L& T factory near Palanpur, where they dumped the body. On Thursday night, locals alerted the Banaskantha police about a stench building up in the area.

After the body was recovered,it was taken to Palanpur Civil Hospital.

A case of murder and destruction of evidence has been registered against the fair organiser and a few of the staff members. Jt Commissioner of Police Ajay Tomar said,“They thought if they disposed of the body, nobody would come to know till they wound down the fair and move on to some other city.”
