The owner of a coaching class in Godhra was arrested from Gotri area of Vadodara late on Sunday night for allegedly raping a minor student several times since May and threatening to make public a video of the act.
Acting on a tip-off, Godhra police arrested Malkit Bhatt, who was booked Saturday night for rape and criminal intimidation, from the residence of an acquaintance in Vadodara. He would now be produced before a court in Godhra on Monday.
According to the complaint filed by the 17-year-old victim, Bhatt had called her to the classes on May 10 on the pretext of preparing a test paper. “From there, he took her to his house, where he gave her a spiked sherbet and thereafter, as she fell unconscious, he raped her and filmed the act. When she regained consciousness and realised what had happened, he threatened to make the video public. Scared, the girl complied with what he said. She has stated that he raped her several times since May, blackmailing to release the video on the Internet,” a police officer said.
The Class XI student stated that threat to her reputation had held her from lodging a complaint earlier. The girl further stated that although she felt threatened, she gathered courage and decided to tell about the incident to her parents. The parents then approached their family lawyer, seeking help to file a police complaint on Saturday.
Supporters of the accused and the victim had arrived in the police station on Saturday night to confront one-another. “We are probing Bhatt’s mobile phone and laptop data to check for such objectionable videos. Although Bhatt has denied the incident, we have gathered clues from his mobile data,” the officer said.
