Civic body suspends 489 resident doctors

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has suspended all of its 489 resident doctors for joining the ongoing strike, which entered the fifth day on Monday.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has suspended all of its 489 resident doctors for joining the ongoing strike, which entered the fifth day on Monday. Showcause notices have also been issued to them, asking as to why their residency should not be cancelled. They have been given ultimatum of 24 hours,an AMC release said.

Interestingly, the 25 resident doctors, who were suspended for molesting nursing students on Holi in March this year, also joined the strike invoking immediate suspension on Monday.

The residency of 11 doctors, who have got admission in super specialty branches this year but whose registration is yet to be done, has been cancelled for joining the strike, the release added.

As many as 50 interns from other hospitals and 25 teaching staff from the NHL Medical College have been brought to the VS Hospital to ensure smooth running of medical services.

In Vadodara,Baroda Medical College (BMC) campus wore a deserted look as all junior and intern doctors headed for Ahmedabad to join their counterparts from all the six medical colleges of the state.

On Monday, all the local committees and associations of Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) and Intern Doctors’ Associations in every city were dissolved. “We are now functioning under one single committee —Gujarat Association of Resident Doctors (GARD). This has been done to have unanimous circulation of information and decision,” said a third-year resident doctor of BMC,who is on strike.

“Late on Sunday night,we had individually submitted a joint letter to the dean. We have stated that the issue of hike in stipend amount has been going on since August 2008 and we have not been given any concrete answer to our demands. We will continue the strike till our demands are met,” said another doctor on strike.

Incidentally,no action was taken against the agitating doctors after the 4 pm deadline for reply to the showcause notice expired. A senior BMC official said,“As per government notification, all the heads of department had issued showcause notices to the students. They have not yet given the reply through the proper official channel that we are following.”
