A troupe of 16 children, mostly from slums, would be touring the United States from next month to spread Mahatma Gandhi’s message of ‘Ekatva’ (oneness) through a dance-drama.

Groomed by noted danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, the troupe is scheduled to perform in Chicago,Houston,New Jersey,Washington DC,Los Angeles,San Francisco,Austin,Atlanta and Montclair.

“The show,Ekatva,is inspired by a similar project by the children from slums here, called Ekta (unity),in 2001. However, this time they are younger than those in 2001,so it was all the more challenging to prepare them,” said Mallika.

“They are in the age group of 12-13 years… It appears like a big task for this young lot,but we have experienced they have potential of doing so much.”

The children are largely from slum area of Rama Pir No Tekor. Several organisations have contributed to support the tour.
