Chavda said they were detained for more than three hours at the police headquarters in Shahibaug. As party workers were asked to sit inside police vehicles placed on the bridge, a brief friction between Congress members and the police was also witnessed.
SEVERAL Gujarat Congress leaders including Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Chavda were detained by the Ahmedabad city police on Wednesday as they staged a protest march towards BJP city headquarters in Khanpur.
The Congress had organised the ‘padyatra’ from Nehru Bridge till the BJP office in Khanpur against ‘misusing’ independent agencies such as Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and CBI to ‘curb’ voice of the opposition.
Claiming this to have been proved in the National Herald case, Congress said the Delhi court has refused to take cognizance of the ED’s case on National Herald, a move that provided relief to former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
“As soon as the we were about to cross the Nehru Bridge from where we started our march, the police detained around 100 of our workers and leaders including Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Leader of Opposition Shahezadkhan Pathan, Congress leader Shahnawaz Sheikh, along with corporators and party workers, from moving ahead,” Amit Chavda told The Indian Express.
Chavda said they were detained for more than three hours at the police headquarters in Shahibaug. As party workers were asked to sit inside police vehicles placed on the bridge, a brief friction between Congress members and the police was also witnessed.
“The decision for this march was taken late Tuesday night only so we had not sought police permission,” he said.
