The Union Ministry of Law and Justice has asked the Gujarat government to expedite the electronic court (E-court) project in the state for better and faster disposal of cases.

Devendra Kumar Sikri, secretary (Justice),who was on a two-day visit to the state recently to monitor the project and computerisation of courts, has also instructed the state law department to replicate the project across Gujarat.

“The secretary (Sikri) has asked for a detailed action taken report before April 20,” said a senior state government official.

The project was launched by the Gujarat High Court in February 2009. But it gradually lost steam.

The model e-court prevents undertrials from stepping out of jails for case hearings as the court appearances are facilitated through video conferencing.

Everyday, nearly 250 prisoners lodged in the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad are taken to various courts. This exercise involves 300 policemen. The E-court facility promises to enhance the security of the jail premise too.
