The oil spill across a 100-km swath on the south Gujarat coast early this month served as a wake up call for the Gujarat government. It has now sought Centre’s help to deal with recurring oil spill incidents in the Gulf of Kutch, which threatens the marine bio-diversity in the National Marine Park and Sanctuary.

At a meeting of Environment and Forest ministers of all states convened by the Union Environment Minister in New Delhi last week,Gujarat Forest Minister Mangu Patel urged the Centre to set up a modern system in the Gulf of Kutch to prevent and mitigate such accidents.
