Central assistance to wash away water scarcity in city

Civic officials,who held a meeting with the Urban Development officials at New Delhi,told Newsline that they had been in constant touch with the Centre for providing funds to strengthen the reservoirs instead of just repairing the damaged portions.

The Pratappura Sarovar was damaged in the 2005 floods. The easy way out was to repair the damaged portion. But all these are temporary solutions, a senior VMC official said.

He added: We strongly demanded for the funds to strengthen the entire reservoir. We have now received the funds of Rs 29 crore as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. This would include modification of the feeder canal of Ajwa Sarovar and strengthening and restoration of Pratappura Sarovar. Sources said the

city will benefit in terms of quantity of water with the implementation of these two projects.

The present height of Ajwa Sarovar is 212 ft but with the restoration,the height will be 214 feet. This means that the storage capacity would also increase and citizens would get more water, said the official.
