The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),which is probing the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case, has sought detailed records concerning special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Rajendra Kumar during his stint as IBs joint director in Gujarat from 2001 to 2005,sources said.
CBI is looking for evidence to corroborate statements of some of the accused policemen in the case whose confessions are said to have generated new leads.
Sources say CBI wrote to IB a few days ago. The agency has reportedly sought information on vehicles used by Kumar, his drivers, the genesis of intelligence inputs generated by him and details of his movements in 2004.
Kumar,a 1979-batch officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre,is due to retire next month. He has come under the scanner in connection with at least two encounter killings that took place in Gujarat during his stint there the Ishrat Jahan encounter and 2003 Sadiq Jamal encounter.
CBI had earlier told the Gujarat High Court it would file a chargesheet in the Ishrat case by July 4. Kumar is likely to be among those chargesheeted in this case.
