ALLEGING THE state police department to have sprung into action only after Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki’s announcement of a statewide ‘janata raid’ against illegal liquor vends and bootleggers by party’s women wing, the state women’s wing president Sonal Patel accused the police of colluding with the state government machinery in hampering the drive.
“During the recent raid by nearly 200 party workers Sunday afternoon in Borij in Gandhinagar district not far off from chief minister’s residence, police were prompt to reach the spot and warned our members if they become too aggressive in their campaign, the police would take action against them. This reveals an open nexus between the police and illegal liquor business rampant in the state,” alleged Sonal Patel.
The accusations were made while officially launching the ‘janata raids’ at four districts – Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot – from Congress office in Ahmedabad Sunday.

Also, referring to the recent circular that was issued from the director general of police (DGP) in response to this Sunday campaign, Patel said, “When the state government learnt about such a campaign to be launched by the women wing, the DGP himself immediately issued a circular stating to take action against all the concerned police officers under whose jurisdiction the janata raid would prove to be a success. This proves that even the police and state government accept the fact that there is no implementation of liquor ban in Gujarat.”
Further accusing the police and state government, she said that as soon as information of such a campaign came to their knowledge, they ensured no activity at the liquor ‘addas’.
“The police have ordered all such activities to go underground for some time as we could not find anything at most of the places we raided. Even our district representatives received calls from the local police seeking information of their plan of action as to when and where they would conduct raids,” she added.
Declining approaching local body elections to play a role in the reason behind and timing of this campaign, she said that this campaign would continue even after elections.
“More than the elections, this is a women’s issue. Wherever we go, we receive complaints from women against this problem. This is a threat to women safety and security both inside and outside her house. In her house, she is subjected to domestic violence while outside, her safety is at the stake only because of this illegal business flourishing in Gandhi’s state where alcohol is banned,” Patel said.
