By-polls: Teachers can’t leave Rajkot without nod

IN an indication of by-polls to two Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency in the district being round the corner,teachers have been asked not to leave the district without prior permission of higher authorities.

After a meeting with district collector Rajendra Kumar,District Education Officer (DEO) Jivabhai Visiya issued the circular on Thursday for secondary and higher secondary teachers. The order comes when the May vacation is about to begin in schools.

”The notification for the by-elections is expected anytime. The first-level checking of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is already on. The circular is part of our pre-poll preparations,Ketan Thakkar,Deputy Election Officer of Rajkot,said on Friday.

While Dhoraji and Jetpur Assembly constituencies had fallen vacant after Vitthal Radadiya and his son Jayesh resigned after quitting the Congress Party to join the BJP. The Porabandar Lok Sabha constituency had fallen vacant after senior Radadiya,who represented the seat as a Congress MP,opted to be a member of the state Assembly early in January. He was among the strongest Leuva Patel leaders of the Congress. He and his son had left Congress in March,saying they were being ignored in the party.

Before the state Assembly elections in November-December last year,it was believed that will get a ministerial birth in the Union government.

But after he was caught flashing gun at a toll plaza near Vadodara in October,his prospects were ruined.

After almost all top Congress leaders lost in the Assembly polls,Radadiya was in contention to be elected the leader of Congress Legislature Party and become the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. However,former deputy chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela was made the Leader of the Opposition,leaving Radadiya fuming and leading to his defection to BJP.

While the BJP is expected to field the duo from the twin seats they had won on Congress tickets,state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia is likely to contest from Porbandar Lok Sabha seat. Modhwadia had lost to Babu Bokhiria from Porbandar Assembly constituency.
