Five days after he ran a bus over a crowd at Indira Circle in the heart of Rajkot city, killing four people and injuring four others, 37-year-old driver Sushipalsinh Dilubha Rana was placed under arrest by the Gandhigram police on Monday.
The arrest took five days as Rana was admitted at the Rajkot Civil Hospital after the accident, having suffered injuries after an angry mob had pulled him out of the vehicle and severely thrashed him.

Speaking on the development in the case, Inspector S R Meghani of Gandhigram police station said, “The accused bus driver was arrested after he was discharged by the doctors at Rajkot Civil Hospital.” Rana will be produced in court on Tuesday.
Notably, shortly after his arrest, Rana told the police during questioning that he had tried to stop the bus but “the brakes did not work”, Inspector Meghani also said. Rana’s statement, however, is contradictory to the police’s investigation in the matter.
Zone-2 DCP Jagdish Bangarwa of the Rajkot city police had earlier told The Indian Express, “Four people lost their lives and four were injured in the incident at Indira Circle. We checked the vehicle, but it is mechanically fit and the brakes and all are in working condition. So prima facie, it looks like the driver lost control.”

Rana was booked under several sections of the BNS and the Motor Vehicles Act for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and other charges.
The deceased was identified as Kiran Chandresh Kakkad (56), Raju Manu Gida (35), Sangeeta Dhanraj Chaudhary (40), and Chinmay alias Lalo Harshad Bhatt (25). Gida was a civic body employee.
Besides, Vishal Rajesh Makwana (28), Suresh Dharmesh Raval (42), Sonia Ajay Rajbar (17) and Virajba Mahaveersinh Khachhar (7) sustained injuries in the incident.
