Two persons, including a 15-year-old boy, were swept away by the currents of Narmada river at Diver village in Vadodara district’s Shinor on Friday. Sixteen hours later on Saturday, the Karjan fire department retrieved the bodies 2 km away from the spot where the two had drowned.
The deceased, Ramesh Patel (30) and Yash Patel (15), were a part of a group of 25 people from a family belonging to Madwa and Maktampura villages of Bharuch district. The group had arrived in Diver on Friday for a picnic at the riverside, where a few members decided to take a dip in the river.
Around 4 pm on Friday, Ramesh and Yash were swept away, resulting in local divers and the fire department starting a search and rescue operation. However, the operation was called off for the day after sunset, as Ramesh and Yash were feared drowned. Early Saturday, the Karjan fire department retrieved the two bodies about 2 km away from the spot where they had drowned.
A member of the group, Pradeep Patel, said, “Our family members had arrived from Mandwa and Maktampura for a picnic on Friday. We were all enjoying a bath in the river when we realised that Ramesh and Yash were missing. We started looking for them but could not find them and thus informed the talati of Diver village, who informed the deputy mamlatdar and a rescue team of the fire department arrived at the spot.”
This is the third incident of drowning reported at rivers in Vadodara district in two weeks. A group of seven persons from Surat had drowned in the Narmada river at Poicha on May 14 while bodies of four unidentified youth were recovered from Mahisagar river by the Vadodara taluka police on Thursday.
