The Special Operations Group of Junagadh police on Monday arrested a foreign national in connection with an online lottery fraud.
Police said that one Mitesh Thakur,working as an accountant with a resort near Mandvi in Junagadh district,was allegedly duped of Rs 1.71 lakh on the pretext of $50,000 lottery award on the Internet .
According to a complaint filed by Thakur,a company named Tony Morgan had promised to send him a draft of $50,000 only if he paid the processing charge. Following this,Thakur paid Rs 1.71 lakh to the company in three installments between May 3 and 5.
Later,the company said he could claim the draft only if he would deposit another Rs 4.5 lakh. When Thakur expressed his inability to pay that amount,the company sent one Proven Johnson Thompson from London to Mandvi.
Thompson allegedly asked for Rs 75,000 to go Delhi to collect the cash and deliver it to Thakur,after which Thakur approached the local police and registered a complaint. Based on this,police arrested Thompson,a citizen of Republic of Botswana.
Police said they recovered some dollars from his possession,which they suspect are fake. They also seized some stationary and ink probably used for printing fake currency notes.
