What appeared to be a case of suicide in Jamnagar district has now turned into a case of forcing a 22-year-old college girl to take the extreme step by blackmailing her with the help of mobile phone clippings.
Investigation by local police has revealed that this girl was allegedly blackmailed by her paramour with some of her compromising photos. The girl committed suicide two days after the photos came into circulation in Khambhalia.
On Monday, the police arrested a local youth Vivek Joshi, who the police said blackmailed this girl for a couple of months. Once Joshi, with whom the girl reportedly shared an intimate relationship, had some compromising photos of the victim,he blackmailed her to continue to have physical relationship with him for months. The photos, taken using a cell phone camera, were out in the market following which the girl killed herself on January 6.
The police are also looking into the role played by four other men who allegedly helped Joshi in circulating the photographs. She hanged herself from a ceiling fan with a duppata on January 6, said investigating officer I Jadeja.
The police say the events that led to the girl’s death are intriguing. First,it was the mobile phone clippings that created ripples in the small town. Two days after the photographs circulated in the market, she committed suicide.
It was the finding of a suicide note from a text book of the victim that threw light on the mobile phone clippings released in the market and her suicide. The note allegedly said that she was being blackmailed by Joshi, whom she once loved.
“In her suicide note, the girl also revealed that for a couple of months Joshi, with whom she wanted to end the relationship, blackmailed her by using her photographs and forced her to have physical relation with her,” said the police.
The police say the girl has also mentioned in her suicide note that she wanted Joshi to be punished.
”Joshi has been detained and preliminary interrogation is on.
He has been booked under IPC 306(a) relating to compelling someone to commit suicide”,said the police.
While police have raided two mobile phone shops and seized the clippings, they did not rule out the possibility of involvement of other four youths, who the cops say helped Joshi in circulating those clippings.
