With more industries getting nod from the state government, the villages surrounding the industrial belt in Bharuch district are crying foul over increasing commercialisation ignoring the health issues.
The inauguration of Japanese ink-making company Sakata Inx (SI) on Thursday has further irked the residents of the region. The villagers from Panoli and Sanjali village have recently submitted a memorandum to the district collector to address the issue.
The industries are set very close to villages because of which residents of these areas suffer from health-related problems. Just three kilometres from this place is a pesticide-making industry which creates a lot of air pollution. Children of this area suffer from asthma and skin problems, said Mohammad Dauji Patel, sarpanch of Sanjali.
Bhika Patel,a villager, said: Ours is a village with a population of around 4,000. The crops are affected and we get only 50 per cent of the produce because of the pollution. Besides, the land is being acquired with false promises of jobs in the upcoming industries. Nothing is being done to control the menace of pollution.
Bharuch District Collector Aarti Kanwar said: They have submitted a memorandum listing their problems. A government resolution has been passed regarding villagers getting jobs. And one of the companies has been asked to submit a survey report of the pollution created. Corrective measures will be taken after the report is submitted.
