Former minister in the UPA-II government Bharatsinh Solanki will formally take over as president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Saturday. An announcement to this effect was made by GPCC spokesperson Manish Doshi on Thursday.

Over 1,000 supporters of Solanki are expected to attend the function that would be held in front of the state party office in Paldi.

Prominent party leaders to attend the programme are outgoing GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela, AICC secretary and state party in-charge Gurudas Kamat and all AICC office-bearers from Gujarat.

However, Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary and Rajya Sabha member Ahmed Patel is unlikely to attend the programme due to the ongoing session of Parliament. Ahmed Patel and Bharatsinh Solanki are reported to be not on good terms with each other. Solanki is reported to be the choice of Rahul Gandhi who is all set to become party’s president in April.

Party sources said that Solanki had asked to get the area properly sanitised in view of Swine flu that has taken epidemic proportions in Ahmedabad. He is also learnt to have asked the party to buy sufficient number of masks and give it to those who come to attend the function without mask.

Sources said that the contract for sanitising the areas around the party office had been given to a private contractor.
