The district collectorate carried out an investigation after a photograph was published in the Newsline of April 21,showing three benches at the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital embossed with the name of Vadodara BJP candidate Balkrishna Shukla.

On Tuesday morning, officials first smeared the name of Balkrishna Shukla with black paint and eventually removed the benches from the spot.

A fortnight ago, three concrete benches were placed opposite to the emergency ward at SSG Hospital creating a controversy on whether it violated the Model Code of Conduct.

The three benches were embossed with the words – ‘Swarnim Gujarat – Mayor Shree Balkrishna Shukla’.

The SSG authorities denied their cognisance over the installation of the benches, but, nevertheless, had the names smeared and the benches were eventually shifted from the spot today by 11.15 am.

SSG Superintendent Dr Atul Saxena said: “The matter will come upon us since the benches were installed within the SSG premises.”

The relatives of patients showed their discomfort over the removal of the benches. Amina Patel,a relative of a patient said: “May I sit on that rock over there or will they pick that up as well? When they have removed the name, what was the point in taking away the benches?”

On his part,Deputy Municipal Commissioner C M Makwana told Newsline: “New orders for benches were not placed by the VMC. When our team went there, the benches were already shifted from there. I suppose, the benches were earlier installed somewhere and were then shifted to the SSG Hospital.”
