A legal battle has broken out over the appointment of a V-C for the Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachch University at Bhuj.

BJP functionary Trikambhai Chhanga, who is the president of the Kutch district panchayat and also a member of KSKVKU’s executive council, has moved the High Court, seeking directions disallowing Governor Kamla Beniwal to dissolve the existing search committee for suggesting a list of probable vice-chancellors.

The university did not have a V-C for the past one year and is currently headed by Pranesh Dave,a faculty member of Kachch University. The next date of hearing the case is December 13.

Chhanga moved the court after the Governor twice rejected the names suggested by the panel. Last month, she dissolved the search committee and went ahead with appointing a new search committee. Speaking to The Indian Express,he said that the dissolution of the search panel was “unconstutional” and that was why he has moved the court. Chhanga has requested the court to continue with the same search panel. The search panel, which had twice suggested the names of V-C probables, was headed by former vice-chancellor of Bhavnagar J P Maiyani, with V-C of Indian Institute of Teachers Education at Gandhinagar Kamlesh Joshipura,Daxesh Thakar of Kachch university and University Grants Commission representative GRC Reddy as its members.

The committee first suggested three names — Pankaj Jani, former V-C,Shree Somnath Sanskrit University,Shashi Ranjan Yadav,ex-V-C of KSKVKU and retired IAS officer I B Peerzada. But the Governor rejected it saying that UGC norms had not been followed. The committee then came out with another panel of three names. The three names recommended were L M Manocha,a scientist at Sardar Patel University,KSKVKU’s fiormer V-C Shashi Ranjan Yadav and Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University’s former V-C K K Shah. But these names were also rejected by the Governor.
