Auto-rickshawS’ union demanded complete removal of value added tax (VAT) on CNG in a meeting with State Energy Minister Saurabh Patel on Monday and said they should be allowed to use petrol as an alternative arrangement.

Gujarat Rajya Auto-rickshaw Chalak Parivar Seva Samiti president Ashok Panjabi, who led the Samiti representatives, said the minister gave an indication that the state government could consider permitting use of petrol in auto-rickshaws rather than conceding to their demand of total removal of VAT on CNG exclusively for auto-rickshaws. The Samiti also urged the minister to roll back the recent hike in the CNG price.

“Our two leaders,Harihar Mishra and Kirit Amin, will sit on a two-day hunger strike from Wednesday. If our demands are not met by April 25,we will go for state-wide protest on May 1,the foundation day of the state of Gujarat,” Panjabi said. As of now,the prices of petrol and CNG are almost equal,he said, which will lead auto-rickshaw operators to revert to petrol even if it involves the purchase of a new vehicle. Patel told the delegation to meet Finance Minister Nitin Patel.
