(Express Photo) An autorickshaw driver was arrested in Mehsana Monday in connection with the death of a 22-year-old Dalit woman who was found dead in the district’s Basna village on April 27.
According to the police, the victim boarded the auto rickshaw that belonged to the accused, Vijayji Thakor, to travel to Visnagar around 8:30 pm on April 25.
“He took the girl forcefully to the site—an agriculture field in Basna village—where the crime was committed. He raped then her and took off her clothes to strangle her to death,” the police stated.
The police stated they examined CCTV footage of the command control and shops in the vicinity to zero in on the accused. “On April 25, the victim left her place of work around 8:30 pm and reached the rickshaw stand near the civil hospital. She took a rickshaw to Visnagar. A rickshaw with a hood of “goga maharaj” was cornered as it was found suspicious,” the police said.
