The Ukai Dam in Tapi district of South Gujarat was filled to capacity on Tuesday, reaching the danger level of 345 feet, with heavy inflow of rainwater from upper catchment areas.
Sources said that the inflow of water into the Ukai dam on Monday evening was 11,124 cusecs. The outflow has been maintained at 800 cusecs through canal network for irrigation purpose while 10,324 cusecs had been discharged through hydro power generation. At 100% capacity, the total water in the dam is 7,414.29 Million Cubic Meters (MCM) at present.
Talking to The Indian Express, Superintending Engineer of Ukai Dam Hemant Chaudhary said, “In the current monsoon season, which started from June 1, till date, the dam has received inflow of 12396.81 MCM water; of this, 7,645.87 MCM water has been discharged till date. Among the total water released in the current monsoon season, 214.64 MCM was discharged through canals for irrigation while 2126.37 MCM was discharged through hydro power generation and 5304.86 MCM through gates, which directly reached Tapi driver.”
He further said, “We have stored enough water in the dam for use in industries, irrigation, drinking purposes and others. The monsoon season will continue till October 15. If we get more water from the Upper catchment areas in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, we will discharge all the incoming water. As we have crossed the 345-feet level of water in the dam, there is nothing to worry about. The dam has the capacity to store water up to 351 feet.”
On Tuesday, until evening, no rainfall was witnessed in the majority of talukas in South Gujarat, except Palsana (27 mm), Navsari (23 mm), and Jalalpore
(46 mm).
