Interestingly, the BJP did not follow its favourite ‘vijay muhurt’ of 12.39 pm as the takeover ceremony started an hour early. Following his election as mayor,Vora said he would ensure a transparent administration in line with the BJP resolve to transform the city through revolution in infrastructure development, employment generation and environmental preservation. Besides, the common man would get basic amenities like 100 per cent water supply, drains, stone paving, streetlights and storm water drains to their best levels,he added.

Vora listed a number of ongoing welfare and infrastructure projects in the city, including the riverfront,BRTS and Kankaria lake as well as kids’ city, but refrained from announcing new projects other than the ones mentioned in its election manifesto. He also took note of the performance of Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam and his team of officials in the well defined directions. He urged the Opposition to work closely with the ruling party in Ahmedabad’s development at a time when the city had come to compete with other world-class cities.

In his speech,Opposition leader Shaikh reminded the ruling party that it had to complete the yet to be finished works of the previous term. He told the chair that the Congress had not opposed the mayor’s election but when it would sense that people were neglected,it would lose no time in cornering the ruling party. Shaikh’s predecessor Surendra Baxi said his party would not tolerate misuse of funds by the ruling party at any cost.
