An Army man and three college students were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of a youth at Dungri village in Valsad district, police said on Saturday.
The Army man was having an illicit relation with the deceased youth’s wife. The youth had objected to their affair and also threatened the Army man to desist from it, police added.
Acting on a tip-off, Valsad police discovered the body of a youth identified as Mehul Patel (27), a resident of Vrindavan Society at Dungri village in Valsad district, from a lonely farm at Dungri bypass, on Friday morning. The body bore several injury marks inflicted with sharp-edged weapons. Police have sent the body to Valsad Civil hospital for post-mortem.
The police also found Patel’s bike at the crime spot. They informed the family members of Mehul about the incident. Meanwhile, his wife Krishna lodged a missing person’s complaint with Dungri police station.
From the call record details of the deceased, police found that the last call had been made by one Sagar Patel, a resident of Kardiva village near Dungri. When grilled, Sagar confessed to have committed the murder, along with his two friends. He spilled the beans that the contract to kill the youth was given by an Army man, identified as Ravi Patel (25), also a resident of the same village. At present, Ravi is working as sepoy with Punjab Regiment at Faridpur.
Dungri police arrested Sagar’s accomplices, Chirag and Pritam, from Billimora while Ravi was arrested from a hotel near Valsad Railway station on Saturday.
During interrogation, Sagar disclosed that Mehul got married to Krishna, a resident of Kardiva village on February 23, 2014. Krishna and Ravi Patel were madly in love with each other, but their parents were against their marriage. Ravi joined the Army in 2008, but he continued to maintain his relationship with her even after her marriage.
According to police, Krishna is pursuing BEd course in a Billimora college. A few months ago, Mehul came to know about the love affair of his wife with Ravi and their regular contacts over phone.
He not only warned his wife but also called up Ravi over phone and threatened to kill him if he continued the liaison.
An infuriated Ravi had decided to teach Mehul a lesson. He contacted his friend Sagar Patel and informed about the threat. Incidentally, Sagar used to meet Mehul and Krishna regularly after their marriage and developed good relations with the couple.
Ravi struck a deal with Sagar to eliminate Mehul. As per the contract, Ravi paid Rs 15,000 to Sagar as advance and assured that remaining Rs one lakh would be paid after the work was done.
Sagar in turn contacted his friends, Chirag Patel and Pritam Patel, both residents Undach village near Dungri to carry out the murder.
Acting on a plan, Sagar went to Mehul’s house in Dungri on Friday morning and pretended that his bike had run out of fuel and he needed help. Mehul accompanied Sagar to a farm near water canal at Dungri Bypass, where both Pritam and Chirag were waiting with knives. Mehul got suspicious and tried to escape but the three overpowered him and stabbed him to death.
Dungri Police Sub-Inspector V A Dabhi said, “Ravi came to Valsad on Friday, after taking leave, and stayed in a hotel near Valsad Railway station. Sagar and Pritam are studying B.Sc. second year in a college at Billimora, while Chirag is studying in an engineering college in Rajkot. We have arrested all of them and also recovered the knives.”
