In a startling revelation in the alleged rape and murder of a girl in Nani Dhari village of Amreli, police on Monday claimed that the 21-year-old victim was murdered by her teenage brother and that the story of rape was fake. “The girl had an affair and her brother did not like this. So,he strangled her to death and later concocted the story of rape, murder and loot. The post-mortem report does not reveal the girl had been raped,” said Junagadh range Inspector General (IG) E Radhakrishna. Amreli district falls under Junagadh range.

The IG said the police suspected the story the 17-year-old boy narrated to lodge an FIR on Saturday as it did not have the natural sequence of events. “But we waited for the completion of the victim’s last rites before grilling him. He has confessed to killing the girl when their father was away,” Radhakrishna said, adding that the teenager had been detained on Monday. The funeral of the girl was held on Sunday evening.

Shobha Bhutda,Amreli’s Superintendent of Police (DSP),said the policemen got suspicious when the boy,a Class XII student, stated in his FIR that he took three hours to cover the distance of five kilometres to reach Ingorala village. “But the boy has confessed to the killing and the investigating officer did a re-construction of the crime late on Sunday evening,” she said.

In his complaint, the teen had alleged that one Sanjay Vala (27) and an unidentified man had barged into their home at around 11:30pm on Friday. The unidentified man held him at knife-point as Vala raped and later murdered the girl, the boy had alleged. However,he escaped from the assailants and reached a relative’s house in the nearby Ingorala village by riding a bicycle, sates the FIR. M K Chudasama, the investigation officer in the case, said the boy noticed a wrapper of condom slipping out of the girl’s clothes when she returned home after reportedly meeting Vala with whom she had an affair. “The sister requested him not to tell their father and the boy was pacified for a while. But,later on,the boy tied her to bed and strangled her to death. He also tried to force pesticide down her throat,” said Chudasama.

Chudasama said the girl and Vala,a neighbour, had an affair for the last four years.

“Vala had even bought the girl a mobile phone without the knowledge of her family members,” Chudasama further said. The girl’s father is a farmer and was in Rajkot to meet his elder son. The victim’s mother had died some 10 years ago, police said. Meanwhile,Vala and another man, identified as Bhabhlu Vala, were questioned by police for the second day on Monday in connection with the case.
