Facing criticism over its “poor” handling of the monsoon situation in the city, officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have decided to use the social media to counter such “negative publicity”.
Heads of departments in the AMC have been asked to come up with stories of progress made in their respective areas of operation and make presentations to apprise people on Twitter (@ahmedabadAMC), Facebook and YouTube. An agency has been hired through tendering process to compile the information in form of short film interviews with “common residents of difference areas”, expressing satisfaction over the services of the AMC departments.
One such short film posted on Facebook showed people expressing satisfaction over the improvement in services provided by the AMC. In the clip, people spoke how storm-water flooding in an area was cleared in a matter of hours. The camera captured clear, squalor free roads in eastern suburbs in the background.
AMC standing committee chairman Pravin Patel said, “We show on the social media what is true… there is neither the BJP nor the Congress view in these presentations”, as he insisted that the people’s version was based on facts.
“It is a fact, as has been shown in one of the presentations that the rain water does not stagnate on roads in societies for longer periods. Earlier, rain water that had accumulated in societies in eastern Ahmedabad used to remain there for several days, but now with improved drainage system, water gets emptied in a matter of three to four hours,” Patel claimed.
“We are going to include all major departments like parks and gardens, riverfront and others to apprise our achievements on the social media,” the AMC chairman said.
In the coming days, the AMC will publicise and manage its social events and functions also through social media platforms, said Patel. ‘A private agency has been hired for this purpose and it will be responsible for creating, developing, managing and maintaining AMC’s digital presence on social media platforms” according to the official AMC site.
