The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has embarked on a drive to check whether private hospitals in the city have obtained fire safety certificate and Building Use (BU) permission.

“The health department has registered around 1,200 private hospitals and it is collecting more information. We will soon decide our future course of action and submit a report to the municipal commissioner by the month-end,” said Dr Bhavin Joshi,in-charge medical health officer,AMC.

The department is sending fire officials to all small and big private hospitals in the six zones to check the basic fire safety equipments and necessary precautions taken by the hospitals.

“Priority will be given to check whether the hospitals have a fire safety certificate and building use permission. If not, they will be asked to apply for the same as soon as possible,” said Dr Joshi.

If they fail to apply for the same, notices will be served on them, which may even lead to sealing of a hospital and cancellation of its registration.

The move comes in the wake of a major fire accident that took place in a Kolkata hospital last year.
