Among the three major cities of Gujarat — Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Vadodara — Ahmedabad is leading by a huge margin in terms of having maximum number of children suffering from malnutrition. As per the government records till May this year, the number of malnourished children in the city is 43,820.

The number is in huge contrast to other cities like Rajkot and Vadodara, which have 4,867 and 8,363 malnourished children, respectively. The numbers were declared by the state government on Wednesday, while replying to a specific question on registered malnourished children in cities.

In 2012-13, the number of malnourished children in Ahmedabad city was 76,555. The same figure for Rajkot and Vadodara was 4,867 and 8,363, respectively.

In its reply, the government has stated that it has been taking a number of measures to improve the nutrition level in the malnourished children and decrease such number in the age groups of 6 months – 3 years and 3 years – 6 years.
