The Daman Union Territory police on Monday detained 11 engineering students of an Anand-based engineering college on charges of gang-raping a dentistry student, but later released nine of them.
A third year student of dentistry of Navsari, studying in Daman Medical College, was gang-raped in Daman and Anand, on April 21 and 22, by boys whom she allegedly met on social media. Police on Monday evening apprehended the 11 students of which two youths are in Daman police custody. The boys belong to Surat, Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat.
The 20-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from Bhimpore area in Daman by a group of 11 boys who raped her in a running car, on the evening of April 21. They took her to their rented flat in Mota Bazaar area in Anand. After gang-raping her again they dropped her in Daman the following day.
She directly went to her home in Valsad district, and disclosed her ordeals to her parents. The girl and her parents contacted Nani Daman police and lodged a complaint against the students.
The girl identified three of the 11 youths. Police took statements of all the 11 youths and allowed nine of them to go back to their home on Tuesday afternoon after taking assurance from them they will support police in investigations.
The girl was later taken to the government hospital for medical examination on Tuesday, which confirmed rape.
Sources said that the girl had came in contact with the students through social media and exchanged pictures.
Daman sub-divisional police officer Ravi Kumar said, “On the basis of the girl’s statement we have registered a gang-rape complaint against 11 students. She did not know how many youths had raped her in the flat. We have got her statements registered under CrPC section before the judicial magistrate.”
“We have freed some of the boys who were caught with a condition that they will cooperate with police in the investigations. At present we have not shown them as arrest, as we are waiting to get entire picture clear in the case. The accused are residents of Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and other areas in Gujarat,” Kumar added.
