Passengers at the Ahmedabad airport last week (bottom) and on Tuesday (left); flight schedule board on Tuesday morning shows one IndiGo flight cancelled (ANI).
The Ahmedabad airport on Monday issued an advisory to passengers that said IndiGo Airlines may experience some delays and cancellations over the next few days and that passengers should check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
From December 3 to December 8, IndiGo Airlines has seen almost 350 flights being cancelled at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in Ahmedabad owing to staffing issues.
With the airlines’ operations still coming back on track, airport sources said more planned cancellations are expected over the coming week, although to a lower extent than seen in the past six days.
Most problematic for passengers was December 5, when the number of cancelled flights – 120 – exceeded the number of operated flights – 54 – by almost two times.
One of the most harrowing IndiGo flights during this period was an international one on December 4, which suffered a double whammy of a security issue as well as crew shortage.
IndiGo Airlines flight 6E 058 – which took off from Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah – was destined to fly directly to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. The flight received a bomb threat mid-flight and the pilots diverted the aircraft and landed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, landing at 12 pm. However, the flight was delayed for at least 12 hours even after the security checks were completed since the crew shortage affected this flight as well.
