Ahmedabad: 39 IPS officers transferred; Surat, Rajkot get new police commissioners

The two cities will get new police commissioners while the list of transfers also includes controversial IPS officer Director General of Police PP Pandey and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abhay Chudasama.

The Gujarat government on Friday appointed new police commissioners to Surat and Rajkot cities in a major shake up of 39 IPS officers across the state. The two cities will get new police commissioners while the list of transfers also includes controversial IPS officer Director General of Police PP Pandey and Deputy Inspector General of Police Abhay Chudasama.

According to the list released by home department, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Ashish Bhatia has been appointed Surat police commissioner who was holding the post of Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), while Surat police commissioner ADGP Rakesh Ashtana has been transferred as ADGP Armed Unit, Gandhinagar.

The biggest surprise has come with the appointment of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Anumpam Singh Gehlot as Rajkot city police commissioner. He was posted as Vadodara Range IGP. Gehlot will be replacing ADGP Mohan Jha who has been transferred as ADGP Administration, Gandhinagar.

DGP (Law & Order) PP Pandey, facing charges in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, has been transferred as Director ACB. Another controversial IPS officer Abhay Chudasama has been transferred as Joint Managing Director, Gujarat Police Housing Corporation Ltd (GPHCL), Gandhinagar. He will be working under Managing Director, DGP Geetha Johri, whose name also figured in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

ADGP (Technical Services) Vipul Vijoy, embroiled in a controversy of illegal confinement of his subordinates, has been transferred as executive director (security), Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation.

IG JK Bhatt has been transferred as Joint Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) from his current role in CID (Crime). Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), sector-2 Ahmedabad Manoj Shashidhar has been transferred as IG Gandhinagar range who has been replaced by IPS Shamsher Singh.

In Surat, IPS officer Khursheed Ahmed has been transferred to Surat as JCP (Traffic and Crime). Ahmed’s name has figured in the recently launched book based on 2002 post Godhra riots penned by ex-DGP R B Sreekumar.

Four promoted

The government has promoted four IPS officers to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) rank including MV Chavda who has been posted as DIG Panchmahal Range, Godhra a newly created zone by the home department. Besides, J R Muthalia has also been promoted and posted as DIG Railways, Gandhinagar. Two other IPS officers SK Dave and DN Patel have been promoted to DIG rank. Muthalia was awaiting posting who is also a member of Supreme Court appointment Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the 2002 riots.
