The family members of a boy, who was killed a day earlier allegedly by a bootlegger, took out a protest rally in the Saraspur area of the city on Tuesday against the threats and inaction of police on the bootlegging network operating in the area.
The victim, identified as Dipak Zala, reportedly complained against bootlegger Kishor Makwana. Dipak was killed allegedly by Makwana, his brother Jagdish and few others, who attacked him with knives and swords near Pickers ni Chali. According to the case details, Makwana, who runs a liquor network from Saraspur area of the city, stabbed Dipak several times. When the locals in the area gathered to save him, Makwana and his aides escaped from the spot. They are currently on the run, police said.
Dipak was rushed to Shardaben Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Later in late night, the supporters gathered in huge numbers and stormed at Makwana’s house in Meldinagar area of Saraspur and ransacked it.
However, the police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation. The Shaherkotda police said that a mob of around 400 people pelted stones at Makwana’s house and ransacked his property. Police Inspector K P Patel from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch also sustain injuries in the incident. The mob also damaged an official vehicle, the police said. According to the police, two days ago, both Makwana and Dipak had got into a spat in a wedding ceremony.
The police had registered a case of murder against Makwana and others and also lodged a separate case of rioting against unidentified persons and begun a probe.
