A three-judge bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir Friday granted regular bail to one of the 31 convicts in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case,Abdulraheman Abdul Majid Dhantiya.
Dhantiya was awarded life imprisonment in the case by a special court in February 2011.
A lawyer associated with Dhantiyas petition said he contended in SC that his bail applications had been dismissed several times although he had spent more than 11 years in jail ever since he was arrested on March 12,2002. He also contended that although the trial court had pronounced its judgment,he did not know when the appeals would be heard by the Gujarat High Court (HC).
Dhantiyas latest petition for regular bail was rejected by the HC in June last year after which he had approached the apex court.
The SC granted him bail while considering the time he has spent in jail since his arrest.
In the Godhra case,a special trial court had in February 2011 sentenced 20 of the 31 convicts to life imprisonment. The rest 11 were awarded death sentences.
