One person was killed and another injured when a stampede broke out at Ranchhodji temple at Dakor in Kheda district early Tuesday morning,when devotees rushed to attend the prayer at the temple on the day of falguni poonam,considered auspicious by Hindus.
Dakor police said the deceased,who was yet to be identified,died of heart attack after being crushed when crowd rushed towards the temple. The incident took place around 7.15 am when devotees were rushing to the temple to attend the morning aarti, police said.
The injured,Balwantsinh Dabhi (17),was rushed to Nadiad Civil Hospital. He had come to Dakor from Ghanghian village in Kheda district,Nadiad police said.
This is not the first such incident at Ranchhodji temple,where lakhs of devotees come during Holi celebrations on falguni poonam. Similar incidents have taken place in 1992,1994,and 2004. In 1994,during a similar stampede,four persons were crushed to death,locals said.
They said police had taken measures to avoid such an incident by creating three entrances to the temple,anticipating a heavy rush of devotees.
However,all the devotees rushed from the same direction and towards a single entrance in order not to miss out on aarti. During the rush,a railing outside the temple broke due to pressure,which caused panic among devotees. A person,who would be around 50-55 years of age,died on the spot following cardiac arrest, police said.
