Barely a week after Chief Minister Narendra Modis social media managers launched his Urdu Twitter handle,it already has 286 followers. But @narendramodiU has posted only 24 tweets so far. If reaching out to the Urdu-speaking population in the country was its intention, then its list of followers does not reflect that.
Language Twitter accounts are being seen as Modis idea of reaching out to the nations diverse population. Going by its subjects, however, they clearly dont meet the specific demands of the Urdu audience. They are mere translations of tweets posted earlier in English. Their language leaves no doubt that the translators dont have full command over Urdu.
Interestingly, most followers on this Twitter account are persons least likely to follow or read Urdu. The list hardly has any well-known Muslim on it.
Even while admitting that he didnt see the tweets, national VP of BJP Minority Morcha Irfan Ahmed welcomed the Urdu tweets, calling them an honour to the language. …this is a fitting reply to political parties who show themselves off as champions of Urdu, he said.
Meanwhile,AICC delegate J V Momin sees this as nothing more than an electoral ploy to gain proximity to Muslim voters in states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
