These days,Vadodara Municipal Corporation employees are making sure that they are seen at their work desks during office hours. This is because Standing Committee Chairman Dr Hitendra Patel is conducting surprise checks across departments to identify those who havent completed tasks within stipulated time.
In the past one week,Patel had visited Kamatibaug garden and Gas Project department, and issued show-cause notices to more than 60 employees for not having turned up to work on time.
On Saturday,Patel paid a surprise visit to the Gas Project department of the corporation at 10.45am. He saw that about 55 employees had not shown up for work till then.
I waited and met each of the late comers to seek an explanation as to why they had turned up late. I was not satisfied with the replies given by about 25 of them and so,issued show-cause notices to them to explain why their half-days salary should not be deducted. Those who seemed to have a valid explanation or were late because they were completing work-related formalities in other departments were given a warning and let off, Patel said.
An officer of the Engineering department said,This is going to be one of the most effective deterrents as no one wants to lose a days pay.
Sources in the VMC said that two guards have also been suspended from Kamatibaug garden for turning up at work in an inebriated state when Patel paid a surprise visit there at around 11 pm.
Patels drive has got thumbs up from the Opposition. Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Shrivastav said,The officers have to realise that they are being paid to serve citizens. A drive to make officers respect time is certainly a need of the hour and we support it.
