The Railway ministry has decided to introduce five-digit numbering system for all passenger trains from December.
The main aim is to create a unique train number, which will be the national identity for the trains.
According to the new system, only a prefix of the digit 1 will be added to the existing four-digit numbers, which would cover all express/mail and superfast trains Duranto,Rajdhani and Shatabdi. The names of the trains are not being changed/modified.
The special trains run by the Railways to clear holiday/festival rush shall be numbered on the same pattern, except that they shall have the prefix of digit 0 (zero).
This numbering scheme shall also apply to special trains run on Full Tariff Rates (FTR) basis. The passenger trains and the suburban trains are also proposed to be renumbered. However,it will not cover freight trains.
Five-digit numbering scheme has become necessary as four-digit numbers have got exhausted and the Railways are looking for a system which is easier, scientific, logical and computer-friendly for the travellers.
