A four-year-old girl from Gundi village in Dholka taluka died of diphtheria during treatment at V S Hospital here on Sunday. The incident has caught district health officials off guard.

Ishwarbhai Solanki, father of deceased Rajal, said she had taken ill around January 22 and was taken to a village doctor who referred her to a private hospital in Dholka. “The doctor there told me to get her admitted to the V S Hospital. She was admitted there on Saturday and passed away on Sunday morning,” he said.

Dr S T Malhan of V S Hospital confirmed that there was diphtheria death in the hospital on Sunday and all case history of the deceased was being prepared for the record.

District Development Officer Banchha Nidhi Pani, however, said no such information had reached his office so far. He would get the incident checked thoroughly because “the district has the immunisation rate of 96 per cent and this one coming to light must be a singular incident”.

According to reports, medical teams from nearby health centres visited the village on Wednesday for vaccination of children. The village has a population of around 4,000.
