Rann Utsav, which started as a three-day Kutch carnival in 2009,is all set to become a full-blown extravaganza with the state government making it a 48-day long affair this year. The annual event will begin on December 15 this year and continue till January 31,2013.

According to the state tourism department, almost 75% of the 350 tents that will be put up at the venue have already been booked. “We got around 63,000 tourists in 39 days last year in the White Rann area. This time,we are expecting to see 30 per cent more tourists. The private sector will be adding 150 tents to the existing provision of 350,” said tourism minister Jay Narayan Vyas on the sidelines of an international seminar here on Thursday.

The desert festival, which is sold as a three-day package to tourists, brings together the geographical and cultural diversity of Kutch.

Discounts will rain for senior citizens and foreign nationals this year. “We have increased the tariffs by 30%. But to encourage foreign tourists and senior citizens,we have kept a 10% discount. We have also kept a discount of 10% for groups with less than 50 people and 15% for groups of over 50 members,” said Sanjay Kaul,MD and Commissioner of Gujarat Tourism.
