Three members of a family — a minor boy and his parents — jumped to death from a bridge into the Tapi river at Kamrej in Surat district and late on Thursday night. Their bodies were fished out by the police around 9 am on Friday.
As per Kamrej police, Vipul Ravjibhai Prajapati (40), his wife Savita (38) and their son Vraj (12) — all residents of Ved road in Surat — had left home for an outing on Thursday night. Vipul had told his father Ravjibhai that they would have dinner outside and return late in the night.
Police said that Vipul had debts to clear.
After having dinner, Vipul drove his bike to Timba village where they visited Galteshwar Mahadev Temple on the banks of Tapi. They later drove to a bridge near the temple and jumped into the river, the police said.
A passerby, who was travelling on a bike, found a bike parked on the bridge and footwears lying nearby. The passerby suspected something unusual might have happened, following which he informed the Kamrej police.
A police team reached the spot on Thursday night and carried out a search operation. The bodies, however, could not be recovered before Friday morning.
The Kamrej police called up Ravjibhai and informed him about the incident. The police also registered an accidental death complaint in the case and have started a probe.
Talking to The Indian Express, Kamrej Police Inspector A D Chavda said, “Vipul worked at a diamond firm and he also did some petty works. He had faced a great loss in the share trading business and had taken loan of Rs 8 lakh. Unable to clear the debts, he jumped off the bridge along with his wife and son so that nobody could recover dues from his family members. After he did not return home till late in the night, his father Ravjibhai contacted Chowk Bazaar police and lodged a missing complaint. We contacted Ravjibhai and the Chowkbazaar police and informed them about the deaths.”
