26-yr-old rape victim attempts suicide in court

A 26-year-old rape victim from Nava Vadaj area of Ahmedabad Tuesday attempted suicide by consuming some poisonous substance inside the court presided over by the Gujarat High Court Judge A J Desai.

A 26-year-old rape victim from Nava Vadaj area of Ahmedabad Tuesday attempted suicide by consuming some poisonous substance inside the court presided over by the Gujarat High Court Judge A J Desai. The girl was shifted to Sola Civil Hospital at the earliest where she has been admitted to ICU under critical condition.

The woman,mother of a two-years-old son,reportedly consumed some poisonous substance inside the court after her petition to get the bail granted to the accused cancelled got adjourned due to non-availability of her lawyer. Her lawyer had filed a leave note due to the death of a close relative.

She was immediately taken to the Sola Civil Hospital under critical condition by advocate B M Mangukiya.

Mangukiya said,“The woman was very upset by the police and the accused with reference to her case. She told me that recently she got around four threatening calls from unknown persons. She,in fact,made me hear the recording of the calls. The unknown callers were threatening her to withdraw her rape complaint. The callers were also threatening her while stating that police was not going to her rescue and that they would make her face worse situation then the Delhi gangrape victim.”

In 2010,the woman had lodged an FIR at Meghaninagar Police Station alleging one Sandip Panchal of raping her. She also alleged that she was raped by Panchal in 2008 and that was videographed by him. Subsequently,she alleged,Panchal used to sexually exploit her by threatening to expose the video clip. On December 3 last year,the accused procured anticipatory bail from Ahmedabad City Civil & Sessions Court. And the victim had moved a petition at the HC to get Panchal’s bail cancelled.

“The petition was listed for hearing on Tuesday. However,since one of the close relatives of her lawyer had expired and he had filed a leave note. One of the lawyer’s colleagues mentioned the matter before the court and the court posted the matter for further hearing on March 15. When she was informed by the lawyer about the next day outside the court,she immediately went inside and consumed the poisonous substance from a bottle in front of the judge,” said a lawyer.

The victim’s father-in-law,who was present at the Sola Civil Hospital,said she was from Merath and had entered into a love marriage with his son. “After marriage,my son and his wife were staying in Meghaninagar. And there,the said incident of rape happened. We are very disappointed by police which shielded the accused,” he said.

Superintendent of Sola Civil Hospital Dr H K Bhavsar said the woman is still critical and unconscious.

Hit-and-run: Cops get CCTV footage

Two days after a speeding BMW car hit two bikes leaving a youth dead and three others seriously injured,police on Tuesday obtained CCTV footage of the late-night accident at Lad society circle from one of the cameras installed in a residential building in the area.

No arrests,however,have been made so far.

Sub-Inspector J P Gosai,who is the investigating officer in the case,said,“One of the residential buildings on the road has a CCTV camera on the top floor. When the news of the accident came out in newspapers,the residents handed over the footage to us.”

Based on the information from the RTO,the Vastrapur police said the car,a black BMW,was registered in the name of a city doctor,Amit Shah.

Shah has reportedly told the police that the car was being driven by his driver at the time of the accident and that he had since fled.

Meanwhile,one of the deceased’s friends,Lalit Gupta,reportedly spotted CCTV cameras installed at two shops in the area. He procured the footage and handed it over to the media on Tuesday,alleging the police were not co-operating with him. The second footage shows the over-speeding car hitting the bike and tossing it 20 feet in the air before skidding.
