A 26-year-old man has been diagnosed with Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) — the first case reported from Gujarat in 2026.
The man from Pindarda village of Gandhinagar district tested positive for CCHF at a time when typhoid cases surged in some areas of the capital city.
The CCHF case was reported from Pindarda village, just 17 km north-east of the capital city of Gujarat, upstream along the Sabarmati river.
The viral disease is caused by the CCHF virus which is part of the nairovirus genus of pathogens and is spread by the vector hyalomma ticks. They spread CCHF to humans who come in contact with infected animals. The disease can also spread through bodily fluids of infected humans. It causes fever, muscle pain and bleeding, and, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), has a mortality rate of 10 to 40%.
