2 yrs after daughter was raped, killed in Sydney, family awaits justice

Court set to deliver verdict next week; neighbour has pleaded guilty.

IT’S been a long wait for Sunil and Varsha Thakkar, whose daughter,Tosha, was raped and killed in Sydney on March 9,2011. Their wait will finally be over next week, with the Supreme Court in Sydney set to pronounce its verdict on May 17.

On the morning that she was killed,Tosha,24,was getting ready to leave for college when a 19-year-old boy living next door reportedly forced himself inside her room in Sydney, raped and killed her, then stuffed her body inside a suitcase and called a taxi.

Her dismembered body was found two days later near a canal. The accused, identified as Daniel Stani-Reginald,was arrested a few days later. He has since pleaded guilty.

Tosha went to Sydney in 2006 to pursue a Bachelor’s programme in accountancy, and was set to get her degree in three months. “She wanted to work in Australia as she liked the country,” recalled her mother,Varsha. “She was a gold medalist in judo. She would have defended herself with all her strength,” she added.

“The Supreme Court was set to pass the verdict on April 29-30,but deferred it to May 17. Both the Australian police and lawyer have been very cooperative,” said Tosha’s father,Sunil Thakkar,a finance professional.

Evidence collected by the police suggested that Stani-Reginald had planned the murder beforehand. The police said he had visited many websites on how to rape, murder and become a serial killer.

Stani-Reginald’s lawyer has argued that he is mentally ill. Stani-Reginald’s family moved to Australia from Sri Lanka when he was two years old. When he was still a child, his mother was killed by his father, who is currently serving his jail term.
