A 16-year old tribal girl from Songadh in south Gujarat was allegedly sold off to a farmer from Kheda, for Rs 90,000 by a gang that promised her a job. A case was registered at the Surat crime branch after the girl escaped from Kheda after being “married” to the farmer, to lodge a complaint.
The girl, who is a resident of Songadh taluka, in Tapi district, was travelling to Surat in a state transport bus, four months ago. A woman who identified herself as Meena alias Bhuri Thakor, resident of Bajwa in Vadodara, sitting in the next seat, got friendly with her. The girl told her that she wanted a job and requested her to arrange some job for her. Both of them exchanged their mobile numbers.
Few days later, Meena called her mobile phone and told her that she had found suitable job and told her to come to Vadodara. Meena picked her up from Vadodara railway station and took her to her friend Rai Singh’s house in Saraspur village in Vadodara, with help of another friend Madhu Patel. The girl informed about a job to her parents so they didn’t file any complaint of a missing person at police station.
Meena locked her in a room in Rai Singh’s house for few days and finally made her meet Kirit Bhoye, a farmer from Vatva village in Kheda district. Kirit saw the girl and gave Rs. 90,000 to Meena and took girl with him saying he would marry her. Police sources said that the girl refused to marry him and raised an alarm. Bhoye locked her in a room and threatened to kill her. He also allegedly raped her for two months.
The girl, on the first opportunity, escaped from his house a week ago and returned to Surat. She told her parents the sordid story. The girl along with her parents contacted Crime branch police station on Saturday and lodged complaint against Meena, Madhu and Rai Singh and Kirit Bhoye. The girl was later taken to New Civil hospital for medical examination by police, on Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner of police of Surat Crime branch Antrip Sood said, “We have registered an offence in this case and have started investigations. The victim is a tribal girl and she had gone to Vadodara for getting job but the gang of pimps sold her off to a person and earned money. We have launched search operation of the accused persons in this case and they will be arrested soon.”
