The states Urban Housing and Urban Development Department recently told the Supreme Court that 154 shelters for the homeless are required in Gujarat.

In an affidavit filed on July 3,the state government also said there already exist a lone night shelter,Rain Basera in Vadodara,five beggars homes in Vadodara and two beggars homes in Ahmedabad.

In January,the Supreme Court had issued an order that all states and Union Territories should set up shelters for the homeless; one shelter for every one lakh residents of a town or city with a population of over five lakh.

The court also asked each state and UT to file detailed affidavits.

Gujarat submitted an affidavit that said there are six cities in the state with a population of over five lakh Ahmedabad,Surat,Vadodara,Rajkot,Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.
